fragments or the quest for the creation (or appropriation) of an individual (or cultural) identity
Where do our private memories end, and does our collective memory start? Where does individual creativity end and cultural appropriation start? These questions – apparent philosophical contradictions – I try to answer with the jars I created, in a series called 'Fragments'.
The design – and meaning – of these jars stem and originate from my western roots and my visual language, and are inspired by memories of my travels to North Africa. Together they form, as it were, the building blocks (fragments) of my individual uniqueness, which consists of a combination of time-bound cultural values and (social) norms and my response to them.
